YARON ELIEZER CHITIZ (z”l)

Who was he?

Yaron (or as his family called him - Yaroni) was born and raised in Ra'anana. He was the youngest of five brothers in the Chitiz family. He attended Yavneh Elementary School and later studied at Bnei Akiva Yeshiva in Ra'anana. During high school, he was also a counsellor at Bnei Akiva in the Ra'anana branch for the "Yuval" tribe, a special group for children with disabilities.

After finishing his studies, he continued for a year and a half at the Elisha pre-military preparatory program in Neve Tzuf. His main hobby was enjoying life. He loved soccer and was an avid Liverpool fan along with his brothers and father, even attending several of their games in the years before his death. He also loved playing soccer every Friday, and enjoyed a good BBQ, cold beer and hanging out with friends at the beach on Fridays.

His path in the IDF

Yaron enlisted in March 2020 in the Givati Brigade, Shaked Battalion. After completing his training, he was assigned early to command and became a basic training commander for the March 2021 recruits. After completing his role, he attended the officers' course, after which he returned to be a platoon commander at the Givati Brigade training base. After 8 months in this role, he became an instructors' team commander at Bahad 1 in the "Lehav" course, where he trained two teams in the basic phase of the officers' course. In his last role, he deliberated between becoming the deputy commander of a basic training company or the deputy commander of the “Mivtzait" company of the Shaked Battalion, ultimately deciding to go to the battalion to gain operational experience.

Yaron fell in battle on December 26, 2023, in Daraj Tufah while serving as the deputy commander of the “Mivtzait” company in the Shaked He was killed in an encounter with five terrorists who infiltrated the building where his company was stationed. By being the first to engage the terrorists, he saved the rest of his soldiers from a much worse incident. His soldiers and commanders described him as always knowing how to be a tough commander with the biggest heart. He knew how to demand and push them to their limits but cared for each person under his command both in the brigade and at Bahad 1.

He was a man of kindness, with a huge smile, and a professional in everything he did.

Final letter -

My dear beloved family.

Who is supposed to teach a 23 year old to write such a letter?

What a special and fantastic country…

I feel privileged to take part in the defence of the country, even if I complain all day that my bum hurts from sitting in a Namer (Armored Personnel Carrier) for forty straight hours!

I feel part of the history that is being written now for the State of Israel!

Mom, Dad, Doron, Dandan, Dovie, Yaeli – THANKS!!

Thank you for educating me about Sanctifying God, kindness and love for the Land.

It’s all thanks to you and yours!

If it wasn’t for the crazy family you are, who raised me up and didn’t give up on me and raised me on values and love for the country, I wouldn’t be where I am now (protecting the country, not in the grave ha ha).

I feel proud to go in and fight Hamas under the banner of the Chitiz family and the people of Israel.

Thank you for everything!

You are a family for the glory of the State of Israel!

שרים ומספידים לזכרו

Everyone that knows me knows that you are amongst the most important things in my life.

You are the air that I breathe, the laughter, this genuine friendship.

Dara, I love you, you are my life.

You give me the strength to continue.

I have no doubt that that my future must be with you – I hope that this letter is irrelevant and we will merit many years to build a beautiful family!

I love you all very much!

AM YISRAEL CHAI!

Saar was tragically killed in action while attempting to clear a home of terrorists, sacrificing himself in the ultimate act of courage and devotion.

Saar is remembered for his bravery, his kindness, and the deep love he carried for his family and his community. His legacy continues through his wife, Yasmin, their daughters Mia and Tavor, and all those whose lives he touched.

Saar Margolis of blessed memory was born to Vicky and Selwyn Margolis on Kibbutz Kissufim 39 years ago.

Saar stayed living on Kissufim and made it is home with his wife and children. His parents also lived on Kissufim as well as some of his siblings.

At the time of his death on Kibbutz Kissufim 7.10. 2023 he was 37 years old.

Saar was married to Yasmin and had 2 young girls Mia 9 yrs old and Tavor 7 yrs old.

Saar has sisters and brothers who were all close to him, Marcelle, Lance, Beora, Carmella, Dana and Barak.

Saar had very strong family values and we spent many occasions sitting together. For holidays, birthdays and shabbat meals.  Saar loved to cook for his extended family  and friends especially Thai food. This was his specialty. He even had his own red hot pepper tree in his garden. After his death we took the seeds from this pepper tree and have replanted them, and all-around Israel people now have beautiful red pepper trees which have produced many red peppers.

Saar regularly visited his parents and on Friday afternoon he would sit and have a beer with his father.

Saar was a very strong and prominent figure amongst his community on Kibbutz Kissufim. He was very active in the activities on the kibbutz.

He had many positions over the years.

He was in charge of the Bar Mitzva and Bat Mitzva children as a guide ( madrich) doing many activities with them over the year.

He started the communal vegetable garden, and each season planted vegetables together with the community and when the vegetables had grown and were ready for picking anyone could come and pick what they needed.

He also built a barbeque and clay pizza oven area in the communal garden in which he would arrange communal barbeques, pizza baking and pita baking evenings.

He and his wife Yasmin for many years oversaw the cultural activities on the kibbutz arranging communal activities and holidays.

If someone needed something done or assistance with anything they new to call Saar  as he was always there to help with a smile and a joke.

Saar would love to be with his girls at the swimming pool in the summer.

He would do many jeep rides with his family in the negev area.

Saar was an ambulance driver on Kissufim and a medic. He volunteered with Magen David Adom. On his death the Magen David Adom honoured him with an ambulance in his name.

Saar Loved Goldstar beer and when Tempo ( Goldstar) heard of his death they honoured him with a special edition of GoldSAAR beer.

He was also honoured by a winery who have made a special edition of wine bottles in his name.

On his military base they have honoured Saar with an Olive tree and a Chanukka Menorah which is lit each year at Chanukka.

Saar has a beautiful Torah scroll in his name in a synagogue.

Saar was studying for a degree in security at Bet Berl. After his death a classroom was honoured in his name with his name on the door.

He has been honoured in many ways.

On his more professional side Saar was head of security of Kissufim for 15 years. He built up the local security force by doing hours of training with them and getting them ready for an infiltration. Saar always said this is a possibility, but no one expected an infiltration with such force.

At the time of his death, he was working for the Ministry of Defence in the southern area of the Negev and had a prestigious position.

On 7 October he left his wife and 2 young girls in the safe room and went out to defend the kibbutz and his community he loved so much.

He managed to check in on his mom and his dad and told them to stay in the safe room and not come out.

He fought mostly alone all day. At around lunch time he got a few soldiers as back up. But not enough. They were not enough against the hundreds of terrorists who infiltrated the kibbutz.

Saar fought bravely and according to eyewitnesses of soldiers that day was very focused and new what had to be done. He took charge and gave orders and kept the people calm. He knew what his mission was that day. Unfortunetly he was very much outnumbered by terrorists and was shot later in afternoon.

He saved many people on the kibbutz that day.

We miss him very much. His presence is always felt around us.

He was a person that’s presence was always felt when he walked into the room.

He knew how to be serious and when to smile and would make jokes in most situations.

We remember Saar Margolis of blessed memory deep in our hearts and souls.
