Every year South Africa celebrates Arbor month in September. It is a month that focuses on the planting of trees and crops across the country as we head into Spring.
In honour of Arbor month, the JNF-SA together with some eager volunteers visited the JNF Walter Sisulu Environmental Centre yesterday to plant vegetables in the community food garden alongside the pensioners that farm in the garden.
It was a wonderful day outdoors which began with a tour of the educational environmental centre. We then proceeded to the community garden where we began to plant tomatoes and cabbages.
Thank you to everyone that purchased our educational gardening kits. The funds that were raised through this Mandela Day project were used to purchase seedlings that were planted in this garden.
This food garden enables elderly community members to supplement their income as sole income providers and provide fresh nutrition to their families and their grandchildren.
